METHODOLOGICAL INFORMATION

Description of Dataset
This dataset contains sediment chemistry and phosphorus fractionation data collected from the Clifton Integrated Constructed Wetland (ICW) during 2025.

The dataset includes:

* sediment phosphorus concentrations,
* sequential phosphorus extraction fractions,
* sediment metal concentrations,
* and associated sediment physicochemical properties.

The dataset was developed to investigate:

* phosphorus storage mechanisms,
* sediment phosphorus stability,
* mineral-associated phosphorus fractions,
* and long-term phosphorus retention processes within the integrated constructed wetland system.

Description of Data Collection
Sediment samples were collected from multiple locations throughout the wetland treatment system, including upstream and downstream compartments.

Sediment samples were collected using standard sediment sampling procedures and processed prior to laboratory analysis.

Measured parameters may include:

* Total sediment phosphorus
* Labile phosphorus
* Fe/Al-bound phosphorus
* Ca-bound phosphorus
* Organic phosphorus
* Residual phosphorus
* Sediment iron (Fe)
* Sediment aluminium (Al)
* Sediment calcium (Ca)
* Total carbon
* Total nitrogen
* Organic matter content

Analytical Methods

Sediment Preparation
Sediment samples were air dried, homogenised, and sieved prior to analysis.

Sequential Sediment Phosphorus Extraction
Sediment phosphorus fractionation was undertaken using sequential extraction procedures adapted from Golterman (1996) and subsequent modified wetland phosphorus extraction methodologies.

Sequential extraction targeted operationally defined phosphorus fractions including:

* Labile phosphorus
* Fe/Al-bound phosphorus
* Ca-bound phosphorus
* Organic phosphorus
* Residual phosphorus

Extraction Procedures

1. Labile Phosphorus
   Labile phosphorus was extracted using deionised water under continuous agitation.

2. Fe/Al-bound Phosphorus
   Iron and aluminium-associated phosphorus fractions were extracted using calcium-EDTA and sodium dithionite extraction solution under reducing alkaline conditions to release phosphorus associated with Fe and Al oxides.

3. Calcium-bound Phosphorus
   Calcium-associated phosphorus fractions were extracted using sodium-EDTA extraction solution under acidic conditions.

4. Organic Phosphorus
   Organic phosphorus fractions were extracted using alkaline digestion and acid extraction procedures.

5. Residual Phosphorus
   Residual phosphorus was determined as the remaining phosphorus fraction following sequential extraction.

Metal and Nutrient Analysis
Sediment chemistry analyses were undertaken using spectrophotometric and instrumental analytical methods where applicable.

Experimental Conditions
Sampling was undertaken under operational full-scale wastewater treatment wetland conditions during 2025.

Quality Assurance / Quality Control (QA/QC)

* Replicate measurements were collected where applicable.
* Sediment preparation and extraction procedures were standardised across samples.
* Laboratory analyses followed standard analytical procedures.
* Samples and extracts were analysed using calibrated instrumentation.
* Data were checked for transcription and calculation errors prior to analysis.
* Missing values were retained as blank cells where applicable.
